Quality

Singing bowls are created in many different sizes, shapes, and material compositions that together create a specific sound. Of the millions of bowls worldwide, only a small percentage has the tonal coherence that qualifies them as a ‘singing bowl’.

The highest quality singing bowls produce a magical, warm, well-balanced, and consistent tone.

Bowls that are specifically made to produce a clear sound, are mostly the ones made as medicine bowls; flat bottomed bowls for mandalas of medical herbs.

 Sound

A singing bowl you play by the friction of rubbing a wooden, plastic, or leather wrapped mallet around the rim of the bowl to produce overtones and a continuous ‘singing’ sound. High-quality singing bowls produce a complex chord of harmonic overtones.

Handmade singing bowls have music tune notes. However, you won’t find specific music tones by specific sizes or shapes of the bowl.

Material

Traditionally, singing bowls were made of panchaloha, in Sanskrit literally ‘five metals’. It is a bronze alloy of copper, tin, zinc, iron, and other metals. These antique singing bowls produce multiphonic and polyharmonic overtones that are unique to the instruments. The subtle yet complex multiple harmonic frequencies are a special quality of the high-quality bronze alloy.

Brass as material for singing bowls is very popular because it has the strong anti-bacterial property of copper. Silver, also a constituent of many singing bowls, has strong anti-bacterial properties as well.

Collector’s items

Real antique singing bowls are expensive and collected worldwide. Their popularity is due to their fine craftsmanship and remarkable sound. The aging process improves the tone and centuries-old antiques produce an incredibly rich and beautiful sound.

Antique singing bowls

Manufactured traditionally

The art of making singing bowls in the traditional way is often called a lost art, but traditional craftsmen do still make singing bowls in the traditional manner in hidden corners of Nepal but few contain sky-iron.

Original use

Antique singing bowls are a subset of the general class of household brass bowls that were used for cooking, eating, and storage in Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet.

Decorations

Antique singing bowls display abstract decorations like lines, rings, and circles engraved into the surface. These decorations appear outside the rim, inside the bottom, around the top of the rim, and sometimes on the outside bottom.

New singing bowls

New singing bowls are plain or decorated with religious iconography, spiritual motifs or symbols like the Tibetan mantra ‘om mani Padme hum’, images of Buddhas and Ashtamangala.

Handmade and machine-made bowls

Handmade bowls are used for healing therapy, meditation, and finding music notes. The machine-made bowls are good for sound-making as well.
